Gosh, I love this ask! No one ever assumes that Obito and Rin can potentially break up. Not even go on a break; just ultimately break up - you’re the first one to bring that to the table. xD

I honestly thought of this happening in a Modern AU because it’s easier to find reasons to break up in that type of setting lol XD I hope you don’t mind that!

If Obito and Rin were to break up in a modern AU setting, it would be because of fear of a long distance relationship. The scenario could play out like this: LONG POST AHEAD!

Rin gets accepted into medical school in Suna (assuming it’s another country), which has a far more advanced program than Konoha, and Obito is very resistant about letting her leave. Obito always knew that her dream was to be a doctor, and his dream is to run his own company, but he never thought that she would willingly want to leave the country to study for the next four years of her life, away from him.

The emotional tension between them escalates and Obito and Rin find themselves having frequent arguments because, well, Obito is afraid of losing her and he feels that their relationship will suffer because of the separation. He thinks that everything will change between them in the next four years away from each other. Rin thinks Obito is undermining her career aspirations and resents him for not being supportive and not having faith in her, especially when all she’s been doing is supporting his own dreams from the start.

The fear of the unknown and Rin’s determination to leave ultimately takes a toll on Obito and it pushes him to the point where he initiates the breakup, much to Rin’s shock. She never expected that he’d break up with her, when she initially thought that they could both make it work.

She immediately storms out of his home, leaving Obito to stare after her with his whole body trembling and every breath knocked out of his lungs. He starts breaking everything in the house, screaming and cursing, before sinking to the ground and pressing his palm against his face, gritting his teeth as he painfully sobs. He never thought that their relationship, which was going so fucking well, would end up being over - just like that - and it was his hands that ended up cutting the ties with her. The worst part is that she didn’t fight back when he said those words to her, she just left and didn’t look back.

Rin herself would lock herself in the bathroom and would curl on the ground as her body heaves with deep and sorrowful sobs. It was so hard for her to breathe, she’d be clutching her chest and gasping about how much it (the entire breakup) hurts and she’d stay in there for hours, heavily crying.

As those four years go by, the two of them would try to move on. Obito’s life changes when his company achieved considerable success after working on it diligently. However, his personality changed so much over the years. When he was together with Rin, he laughed a lot and was a very fun guy to be around because of how warm and happy he was. After their break-up, he became more aloof and reserved. He doesn’t smile anymore, he always had a stern look on his face. He spends time at the gym, and his weekends at bars where he has a few flings here and there (an attempt to get over Rin).

Rin would’ve thrown her whole focus on medical school in order to forget about Obito. She makes new friends, meets new people, climbs up the ranks, but she never allowed herself to get into another relationship. Obito was her first, serious relationship and she really thought that they were going to be together for the long run until they broke up… and the heartbreak was traumatizing enough because he was the one that ended things when she never wanted that. She never even planned on staying overseas, she planned to return to Konoha after she graduates.

So four years pass by, and Rin returns to Konoha. Her friends arrange to meet her in a nice, trendy resto-pub (friends are Kakashi, Anko, Gai, Kurenai, and Asuma), where they would catch up. She’d tell them her stories and everyone would swap updates here and there and everything would be going smoothly…

But then… out of all people, Obito walks into the same pub for a business meeting. He’d be waiting for his business contact there, so as he walks in, he takes a moment to look around, and then his eyes land on a familiar face - and his heart fucking stops.

The timing is just uncanny. There she was, smiling as she spoke animatedly, and there was that familiar spark in her eyes. She looked so beautiful, with that long hair flowing and that pink blush on her cheeks…It felt so fucking hard to breathe….He was torn between approaching or just pretending he didn’t see her…but then her friends would be the first to notice him standing there, and whatever conversation they were having just slowly starts to die down as they stare at Obito in shock and anticipation. Rin gets curious about what’s gotten their attention, and she turns her head to see….him.

Her heart flips, and time stops. Tension just fills the room as Obito contemplates what to do next - should he resist the urge to walk over to her, or should he just walk away? But as he looks into her eyes - those bright, gentle eyes that fills him with so much emotions that its almost like he could drown, he finds himself unable to resist that pull and he just…walks over.

Rin is taken aback by this sudden step, and she abruptly stands up from her seat as he stands right before her, and a wave of mixed emotions, ranging from nostalgia, joy, pain and sorrow just wash over her all at the same time.

They awkwardly greet each other… tell each other that it’s been a while…that they both look good… and just a short update of, “I finished med school and now I’m back here…” while Obito goes, “I uhh… I started my own company and I have a business meeting soon…” and the group are just CRINGING at how awkward and tense they are. XDD Obito then asks if it would be alright to exchange contact information before he leaves, to which Rin impulsively agrees without thinking - she’s just running with her emotions upon seeing him and they give their numbers to each other.

As Obito’s business contacts arrive, he sticks out his hand for her to shake as he bids her. As soon as their hands make contact - there is that rush of electricity and a tidal wave of nostalgia and it’s all so overwhelming. They bid each other goodbye, and Rin has to gather herself so she can act normal around the group, waving off the stinging pain in her heart, while Obito tries to compose himself during his meeting despite trembling.

Obito would be the one to try to bridge the gap. He fucking missed her so much that he spent sleepless nights thinking about her and overthinking the whole awkward reunion that they just had. He then leaps out of bed and goes out for a drive to get his mind off things, but all he could think of was the memories he shared with her as he drove around town. Unable to shake off his emotions, he’d pull over somewhere, grabs his phone and rings her up. He’d anxiously drum his fingers on the steering wheel, waiting and hoping she’d pick up. Much to his surprise, after a few rings, he hears a soft and shaky, “Hello…?”

Obito jumps up and almost fumbles with his phone, before he composes himself and awkwardly greets her back. They talk for a bit.. he asks about how she’s settling in.. and he tells her that he was just out. In order to shake off the awkwardness, Rin says that she was planning to head out to eat somewhere before he called. After a few awkward stumbles and unnecessary apologies like, “Oh- shit, sorry..should I uh…let you go…?” and “No, no! It’s fine! I wasn’t busy with anything, r-really!” (XD LOL) Obito plucks up the courage and offers to take her out to eat somewhere. Rin hesitates at first, but Obito tells her it’s just casual and he wants to catch up with her - and Rin finally agrees. She sends him her address, and he picks her up.

Cue in to the most awkward car ride XD where Obito asks where she wants to eat, and Rin says something like, “Uhh.. anything..haha…” and Obito takes her to a cute, little restaurant where they can eat a variety of little meals like soba noodles, udon, ramen, sushi…etc. Here, they catch up about their careers - Rin is offered a position at the hospital… Obito’s company is branching (Rin is impressed with that).. and their next future plans.

Afterwards, they go out for a walk by the park. They ask about their personal lives. Obito asks if she’s dating anyone.. Rin says that she never dated anyone since…well…him. She then asks the same question.. and Obito gives her an answer that is little hurtful since it hints at his flings: “Nothing too serious. Not since you.”

They both come to terms about the fact that neither are ready for another relationship and are just focused on their careers, but they wouldn’t mind seeing each other more often.

And BECAUSE they don’t mind seeing each other more often.. xD This only means that all those feelings they’ve buried deep down will start to resurface. They’d meet up again…and again…and again… and they’d both be walking down memory lane as they hang out in places they went on dates, reminiscing their past moments when things were so good.

Obito starts initiating phone calls with her, and they’d talk to each other for hours - and it’s almost as though they’re getting to know each other for the first time. His schedule is in parallel with hers so that they can meet up when they’re free… and it just goes on like this for a while, all under the pretext of “remaining friends”.

Until one night… after having so much fun together, Obito drops Rin off to her place and walks her to her apartment. As she unlocks the door, she shyly looks at him and invites him in for a drink. It started off innocent.. with Rin handing Obito a can of beer as he roamed around her apartment and took notice of the sea/beach vibes she had all over. Shell decorations… lamp with starfish designs… her stuffed weird looking turtle (Isobu’s design LOL)… etc. xD He comments that she never really changed, and she just sticks out her tongue at him and laughs.

He noticed that she has a lot of photos too, and Rin tells him stories about each one, particularly the ones from Suna. He follows her around as she spoke, and then…there is that one picture frame that she kept hanging… it was a picture of them together, back when they were dating. Rin’s voice dies at her throat as she stares at the picture and turns away from him. Obito stands behind her closely, feeling a mix of emotions after he noticed the photo too. Rin tells him she couldn’t get rid of it.. she couldn’t get rid of any of their pictures together.

Obito would tell her that he didn’t get rid of any of their pictures either. He kept each one of them safely because they were all so important to him. Rin slowly turns to face him as he spoke, and Obito tells her that there was not a single day where he never thought about her, and that he was a fucking idiot for letting her go. His feelings starts to pour out before he could even hold them back, and he tells her that he missed her so much and that he’s still in love with her.

At those words, Rin throws herself at him and kisses him ardently. Obito immediately kisses her back, grabbing her waist and holding her tightly to him, tangling his hand in her hair as he backs her up against the wall. They heavily make out, and then Rin starts leading him to her bedroom, and they’d be discarding their clothes on the way there, and the two of them would have passionate make-up sex. After that, the two of them would talk about wanting to try again, and this time, they would never let each other go and would work on being more supportive of each other and not to repeat the same mistakes they did in the past… and that’s how the two of them would start over.
